Be specific about mattress size
The word “double” often refers to a Full mattress. When discussing a double-over-Queen bunk, specify the exact mattress dimensions for both levels so there is no ambiguity. A typical U.S. Full mattress is 54 × 75 inches and a Queen is 60 × 80 inches. Check your actual mattresses and confirm the sizes included in the proposed design.
Plan around the wider lower bed
The lower Queen sleeping area is wider and longer than a standard Full. Its mattress size is only part of the floor footprint: rails, posts, trim and access features add space. Request the finished frame dimensions and place them on a plan with doors, closets and nearby furniture. Do not assume the bunk fits because the mattress fits.
Consider the upper guest’s comfort
An adult using the upper bed needs consideration for both mattress length and available headroom. If extra length is important, ask whether a different configuration fits your needs. Choose the intended mattress thickness before finalizing the frame and confirm the mattress requirements for each level.
Compare alternatives before settling on a layout
A mixed-size bunk can suit guests who prefer different sleeping surfaces, but it is not the only option. Compare the footprint and sleeping space with Twin XL or Queen arrangements. Include the ladder or stairs, bedding access and space for luggage. The right configuration depends on who will use the room and the measurements of the space.
Request a room-specific quote
